Cultivating Racial Justice — Afri-Can Food Basket

Hello Farm Friends,

During 2020, The Cutting Veg is dedicating one farmers’ market per month in support of Black agricultural initiatives and organizations doing work to serve marginalized communities. Last month we raised $800+ for Black Creek Community Farm, at Sorauren Farmers’ Market, and many of you responded to our newsletter by donating to Black Creek Community Farm as well.  THANK YOU!

This month we will be raising money for the Afri-Can Food Basket (AFB) at Sorauren Market on Sept 7th. Come get some veg and support AFB at the same time!

My personal experiences with the AFB have been many, dating back to 2005.  I worked closely with their inspiring leader Anan Lololi during my time at FoodShare – providing work and agricultural opportunities to marginalised youth in the GTA. I also shared land with AFB at McVean Farm for several years.  It was truly inspiring to observe the AFB youth farm together – growing food, community, and healthy relationships at once. The Afri-Can Food Basket has been a leader in our community since 1995, and during 2020 their work has been more critical than ever.

In response to the impact COVID-19 has on members of our community, AFB launched #BlackFoodTorontoBlack Food Toronto is a food sovereignty initiative that supports members of the African, Caribbean, Black (ACB) community to access fresh produce during the pandemic.Through this initiative, AFB is coordinating weekly deliveries of fresh fruit and vegetables at no cost to members of the ACB community who needs support. Here is Black Food Toronto’s impact so far:

  • Provided fruits and veg to 1278 ACB households in the GTA
  • Provided 117,610 servings of food to these homes
  • Provided 29,711 Lbs of food in total

I hope you will take a moment to learn more about the Afri-Can Food Basket and their initiative Black Food Toronto. I also hope you will support AFB by MAKING A DONATION.

Thank you to all of you who are working each day to end racism and to build an ethical, sustainable food system

Keep Livin’ on the Veg!

Daniel
